5 Most Unnecessary Pet Accessories

Trying to save on pet costs this year? Do your wallet a favour and skip these notoriously unnecessary pet accessories.

1. Pet Stroller

While some people treat their pets as children, unless your pet has mobility issues it’s best to skip the stroller. Cats generally don’t need a walk around the block and dogs should get the exercise instead of being carted around on a stroller.

I have two Shih Tzus and other than trimming have never cut their coats.
They love to be outdoors and of course here in Canada we have snow to contend with. Therefore, wearing boots and sweaters and even snowsuits are a must unless I want to spend hours each day combing the snowballs from their fur. I am ever so thankful for these pieces of clothing!!

Many small dogs are "indoor" dogs and they notice the cold when they are out for their walks in winter. Out in rain, they'll get wet dog smell. I don't think designer clothes are necessary but some shelter from the weather on walks is just being kind.

While the fancy, bling is not necessary - many of the dogs we own in Canada DO need some protection from the harsh cold and salted roads and sidewalks. People say "they have fur" they don't need a coat. And on a double coated dog, this is true. But on a Chihuahua, or a Boxer, or a Greyhound, a coat may be necessary. After all, we have hair (most of us) but we still wear a hat in the winter - the logic is the same. Boots in the winter prevent snowballs in the pads, cuts from sharp ice, and protection from the harsh salt and other chemicals used to de-ice roads and sidewalks. Dogs lick their feet to clean them. The chemicals left behind can cause them harm.
