1. You can eat the WHOLE watermelon

Yes, even the rind! Whether you’re eco-, budget- or health-conscious, you can get the most out of your watermelon by using every bit – inside and out.

Inside: From deep reds and pinks, to orange and yellow, watermelon flesh adds a sunset of hues and sweet flavours to dishes any time of year. Dice it into salads or salsas, skewer or grill it as kebobs, or simply enjoy a big, juicy slice. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

Juice: At 92% water, watermelon is an excellent choice for staying hydrated. And don’t throw away that overripe watermelon! Just juice or puree it to retain the value and nutrition, whether you drink it straight up, blend it into smoothies, or mix it into your favourite cocktail.

Rind: Surprised? The rind is often the most overlooked part of the watermelon. But it’s edible and can be used as a vegetable! Try stir-frying, stewing or pickling the rind. Or use a hollowed watermelon as a compostable bowl for serving up salsas, salads or smoothies.

2. Watermelon is both a fruit and a vegetable

Did you know watermelon belongs to both the fruit and vegetable families? The flesh is often used as a sweet enhancer or fun accompaniment to everyday meals while the rind is commonly used as a vegetable (stir-fried, stewed and often pickled).

Being both a fruit and a vegetable, it’s no surprise watermelon contains a variety of essential nutrients. Some of these nutrients include Vitamin A (8% DV based on a 280g serving) and Vitamin C (25% DV based on a 280g serving).

4. Watermelons are supposed to have that yellow spot

You may think the yellow spot (also called “the ground spot”) is an imperfection, but it’s actually a sign of a great watermelon.

Pick the perfect watermelon using these 3 easy steps:

Look the watermelon over: Look for a firm watermelon free from bruises, cuts or dents.

Lift it up: The watermelon should be heavy for its size because it’s 92% water.

Turn it over: The underside of the watermelon should have a creamy yellow spot from where it sat on the ground and ripened in the sun. It’s weird if it’s NOT there!
