Ibizan Hounds are amazing dogs! But they are not a breed for the 'pushover' or inexperienced owner. You need patience, a firm hand (or they will rule your home), lots of space, tall fences, and love. In return, you'll receive an intelligent, loving companion and lots of attention from other dog lovers. I love the breed so much that I have had at least one, and usually more, sharing my life for over 20 years. Because Ibizan breeders are so dedicated we enjoy the companionship of a breed that hasn't changed much for hundreds of years. They are healthy, high energy, funny, naughty, amazing animals. They will steal your heart and replace it with joy!
I DON,T KNOW WHAT THE QUALIFICATIONS ARE FOR PICKING THE TOP 10 UNIQUE DOGS BUT YOU ARE MOST DEFINITELY FORGETTING THE GREAT AKITA! THIS BREED OF DOG IS THE MOST UNIQUE,INTERESTING,LOVING DOG I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE.
I had a schipperke, he was so sweet. <3
Don't forget the Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever (yes, that's a real dog).
I love your site. These unique dogs are wonderful to see. I saw the as at the right of my screen on facebook. Happy I checked it out. Thanks Readers.
Another great breed is the Hovawart. Our "Chase" is a 6 year old tri-color male and is a lot of fun. He seems to have read the Hovawart "book" as he fits the breed's description perfectly. Hovawart means "home guardian" in German and, while friendly otherwise, he takes this job pretty seriously. Another common characteristic is retaining puppy like "joie de vivre" in his now middle age.
Please, please, get a rescue dog or a mutt. the Humane Societies are full of them. All my purebred dogs required surgeries for genetic defects, had skin problems, eye problems etc. Never again a purebred for me. I learned my lesson.
Akita are an agressive breed and on the list of dogs that an insurance company will not cover if it bites someone.
