Top 10 Most Trusted Canadians of 2010
We see them everyday on television or in the movies, read about them on the internet, hear about them on the news. But how many of these public figures do you trust?
Canadians voiced their opinions in our second annual Trust Poll, and there were a few surprise entries in the top 10. But which public figure did Canadians most trust?
1. David Suzuki
The long-time host of “The Nature of Things” and Chair of the David Suzuki Foundation, this eco-champion has reached out to millions all across the globe, telling people about the danger the environment faces and we can make a differences with small changes.
Honest, compassionate, and communicating a clear message, it’s easy to see why Canadians voted him the Most Trusted for the second year in a row.
2. Mike Holmes
“Canada’s Most Trusted Contractor” takes the number 2 spot on our poll. His straight-forward approach to fix the mistakes from botched renovations is a refreshing sight for many, and brings a sense of security that people appreciate. Holmes’ popular TV series, books, magazine, and charity works shows that he’s really trying to “Make It Right” in the home renovation world.
3. Michael J. Fox
The accomplised actor and best-selling author was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 and has since been commited to raise awareness. In 2000, he founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation in the hopes of developing better treatment for those suffering from Parkinson’s and to find a cure. His desire to help others afflicted with the illness is what earned him the trust of Canadians everywhere.
4. The Queen
Her Majesty The Queen is beloved by many Canadians. As the constitutional monarch, the Queen is very involved in Canadian charities and other public organizations and is briefed on Canadian affairs by the Govenor-General.
5. Lloyd Robertson
Every night on CTV National News, Lloyd Robertson informs Canadians about what happened across the nation and around the world. The veteran news anchor and host of several CTV specials is also active in many charities. Over his career, he has won many awards and accolades, including becoming a member of the Order of Canada in 1998. With so many accomplishments under his belt, people are more than happy let Roberston tell them what kind of day it’s been.
6. Sheila Fraser
Since being appointed the Auditor General in 2001, Sheila Fraser has worked had to ensure that the tax dollars of Canadians are being spent wisely by government, to hold them accountable for their spending, and, ultimately, continue to foster a sense of trust between the people and parliament.
7. Stephen Lewis
Chair of the board of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, Stephen Lewis works tirelessly to help those in Africa suffering from HIV/AIDS and their families. The author of the best-seilling book, Race Against Time, Lewis is also Co-Director of AIDS-Free World, an AIDS advocacy organization and has worked with the United Nations for over 20 years. He has received many awards, including the Pearson Peace Medal in 2004 from the United Nations Association of Canada and being made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 2003. His humanitarian work is truly an inspiration and brings a much-need sense of hope.
8. Stephen Harper
It was a difficult year for everyone, as the world entered into a recession. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has led Canadians through these trying times and continues to work diligently to build a strong and united Canada.
9. Peter Mansbridge
Host of The National and Mansbridge One-on-One on CBC, as well as many of the station’s news specials, Peter Mansbridge has covered many history-making events. Over the course of his illustrious career, he has won 12 Gemini Awards for excellence in broadcast journalism. Mansbridge also became an officer of the Order of Canada in 2008. His broadcast style makes him a reliable source of information for many Canadians.
10. Gen. Rick Hillier (Ret’d)
Gen. Rick Hillier‘s passion for his country and his troops has done wonders for reinvigorating the Canadian military. The former Chief of the Defence Staff approaches situations with the frankness that he’s known for; his strong leadership earning him the trust and respect of us all.
