Photo: GettyThis past summer, Ottawa Bluesfest was packed to the brim with incredible talent, from country stars like Brad Paisley and Sam Hunt to ’80s heroes Billy Idol and Duran Duran. If you happened to have missed the huge event, which broke records by drawing more than 40,000 people in one day, don’t panic. Ottawa will feature dozens of festivals in the fall months, catering to a variety of interests. Here are a few highlights.
There’s something about a bright orange pumpkin that puts you in that breezy fall mood. For the fifth year, Ottawa’s historic Upper Canada Village will display nearly 7,000 intricately carved pumpkins in its special Pumpkinferno installation. Exhibits include Nature’s Way, The Orchard and The Creeping Vineyard. Named Tourism Event of the Year by the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario, the Pumpkinferno walking tour shouldn’t be missed. Open until October 30th.
On October 8th and 9th, visit Mont Cascades ski centre for a full immersion in autumn beauty at Cascades Colourfest. Take in a stunning view atop the mountain via the ski lift, or join in entertaining fall festivities. Located just outside of Ottawa’s downtown core, this event will feature skilled artisans, sales on ski equipment and attire, an Oktoberfest-style BBQ, live music and fun activities for kids. Admission is free for this event, which runs from 10:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.
Ottawa International Writers Festival
Whether you love to write, live to read, or both, the Ottawa International Writers Festival at Christ Church Cathedral is a great way to indulge in a passion for words. Celebrating writing from Canada and beyond, this experience holds events throughout October on subjects such as Current Conditions in Popular Canadian Architecture Criticism. Don’t miss the special (and spooky!) Paranormal Prose in the lead-up to Halloween with Kristi Charish, Nathan Adler and Kelley Armstrong.
