Your Pet Question:
My dog is part boxer/lab mix and she sheds like crazy. What might be the best way to control her constant shedding?

The Expert Says:
Dogs shed. It is frustrating, especially if you have a black dog and white carpet! Unfortunately, there is no way around it. The cycle of shedding is influenced by the increasing and decreasing daylight cycles. As the daylight decreases, dogs develop their winter coat. As daylight increases, they start to lose their winter coat. Generally there is a big ‘blow out’ of the coat in the spring and fall. The lighting in our homes also influences this cycle. Since there is roughly 12 hours of light and dark in our homes each day, our dogs are in a perpetual state of shed. There are no potions or shampoos to stop shedding. The best thing you can do is brush out the dead hair before it hits the ground. If there are areas of baldness or itching associated with the shedding, there may be a medical condition that needs to be looked into by your veterinarian.
