Changing a Receptacle
I need to replace an electric receptacle in my living room. What precautions should I take before changing a receptacle?
None, other than turning off the circuit breaker before you start working. After taking off the cover, unscrew the fixture. There will be mess of wires behind the receptacle. The different colored wires are attached to specifically colored screws. The grounding wire should be attached to the green screw, the black (hot) wire to the brass screw, and the white (neutral) wire to the silver screw. Make sure that they are properly connected before mounting the receptacle back into place and turning the circuit breaker on again.
