Get Beautiful Skin with Natural Products
Looking for affordable, green products for your complexion? We suggest you start with the items that may already be in your kitchen and bathroom cupboards. Here are five all-natural oils and what they can do for your skin-care regimen.
What: Body moisturizer
How: “After a shower when you are still damp, apply to your body as you would a lotion,” says Toronto-based naturopathic doctor Kate Whimster.
Why: Almond oil is high in vitamin E, which absorbs well into the skin and provides a natural layer of moisture, notes Whimster.
Note: If you have a nut allergy, avoid almond oil, warms Whimster. For other oils, try a few drops inside your elbow first to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction.
What: Face moisturizer, wrinkle smoother
How: Warm up the oil and massage it onto your face, advises esthetician Lusia Del, author of Beauty Begins in the Kitchen.
Why: Argan oil is high in vitamin E, an antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals.
What: Acne treatment
How: Spot-treat the affected areas. Apply daily for a few weeks; reduce frequency as redness and inflammation subside.
Why: The ricinoleic acid in castor oil has anti-inflammatory properties. Although it seems counterintuitive to put oil on acne-prone skin, it will help, says registered nutritionist Joey Shulman, author of The Natural Makeover Diet.
What: For soft, shiny hair
How: Massage a dime-size amount into your scalp and on the ends of your hair.
Why: The lauric acid in coconut oil has a molecular structure that is able to penetrate the hair shaft, according to a study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science.
