Veteran Profile: Francis William Godon

Francis William Godon is a Metis veteran who was born in Dunseith, North Dakota, in 1924. He joined the army in 1942, and landed with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles on D-Day, June 6, 1944, only to be taken prisoner shortly thereafter. Francis returned home in 1945 and now lives in Boissevain, Man.

“There were machine guns shooting at us, and we couldn’t get up. First thing I knew, there was my Lieutenant, waving the white flag. What could we do? They said, ‘For you, the war is over.'”
