Meet the Grand Prize Winner of Our 72nd National Sweepstakes

Sherry Kulchyski from Prince George, B.C.

For Sherry Kulchyski of Prince George BC, entering the Reader’s Digest sweepstakes became part of her end-of-day routine. She would come home from work, sit in a favourite rocking chair, open her mail, and fill out the entry form.

“Reader’s Digest remains my favourite magazine, so whenever the form would come I would open it up right away, complete the form and fire it off. I thought ‘Well, someone has to win these things. I’ll send it in and see what happens.' Then I just got into the habit of doing it. Whenever it came in I would open it up right away," said Sherry

On September 25 her persistence paid off. When Sherry got home from work that day, there was a Priority Courier envelope waiting for her. Inside was a letter announcing that she was the winner of the Reader’s Digest 72nd National Sweepstakes—and that she was $500,000 richer!

The letter almost didn’t get opened. Sherry needed some prompting from her family since she was busy preparing a salad for a dinner party. But her son Christopher and husband Merv encouraged her to open the envelope.

“I had to read the letter twice to see if that’s what it was really saying. But it did say I was the only one receiving the letter so I thought ‘okay…maybe’ and my heart started to beat a little faster,” said Sherry. “I thought I would just phone and leave a message with my name and they could phone me back on Monday.”

Instead she spoke directly to Prize Award Administrator Marisa Orsini, and after answering the skill-testing question, it was official—Sherry was on her way to Montreal to collect her winnings.

“Merv said afterwards that my response must have been the most low-key reception she had ever had. But after I got off the phone I did yell, 'I won a half a million dollars.' Then I finished making my salad, but I did forget the goat cheese…in a spinach and goat cheese salad!

Over the course of the next two weeks Sherry would stop and ask herself if it was really happening. Her next challenge was keeping it a secret until the big announcement at the prize ceremony. “Do you know how hard it is to keep something like that a secret for 2 weeks?”

She splurged before collecting her cheque by buying a king-size bed. After the ceremony she plans to put the money towards building an addition to her home, helping her children, and investing the money for a worry-free retirement.

“Winning takes the worry out of retirement. You’re never sure if you’re going to have enough money to do the things you want to do. Now, I can do those things without worry. It's the little things that matter."

Montreal, October 14, 2009 – On September 25th, 2009, Sherry Kulchyski of Prince George, BC, received a letter from Reader’s Digest Canada, by Priority Courier.

A busy career woman, Mrs. Kulchyski was alerted to the envelope by her family as she returned home from the office; to her amazement, it was a notice letting her know she had won $500,000 in the Reader’s Digest 72nd National Sweepstakes. Inside the envelope she found a business card from Marisa Orsini, Prize Award Administrator at Reader’s Digest, and a message to call Reader’s Digest in Montreal as soon as possible.

Even though it was 8 p.m. on a Friday, in Montreal, Mrs. Kulchyski’s family persuaded her to call the cell number on the business card, which she did, and after correctly answering a skill testing question, she was informed by Mrs. Orsini that she had won $500,000. Arrangements were immediately put in place for Sherry and her husband to travel to Montreal for the award ceremony at the Reader’s Digest headquarters, on October 14th.

Mrs. Kulchyski has been entering Reader’s Digest Sweepstakes since 1997, sometimes taking advantage of the special offers, and at other times diligently returning the information requested, without making any purchases, as was the case this time.

She says, “We see this as an opportunity to more fully enjoy our family, with some financial pressures removed. Our son and daughter live in opposite directions from us so building an addition to our home will give us more space for family celebrations – something we like to do frequently. Winning this prize draw takes the pressure off retirement, too. We are thrilled with our good fortune!”

Sherry has no plans to retire immediately; she loves her job, her clients and her staff, and has already put together a financial plan to make the best use of her winnings.

Since 1962 Reader's Digest Canada has given out more than 107,500 prizes for a total value over $25,000,000. To enter the Reader’s Digest Canada 72nd National Sweepstakes, all participants had to do was to return their entry form by mail or by email as no purchase was required. All participants had to be Canadian residents, over the age of 18, and correctly answer the skill-testing question.

The Reader’s Digest Canada 72nd National Sweepstakes was overseen by the accounting firm of Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton, LLP, Chartered Accountants.
