Large dogs can bring lots of fun and joy to a household, and kids especially love them. Despite their size, these “gentle giants” are generally loyal, well-tempered and good-natured creatures. If you are considering a large dog, here are several dog breeds consistently found in the top “biggest dogs” lists, measured by weight, height, and length.

Fun Fact!

The 'big' dogs don't stay on the porch! They are all great breeds but not included was the Scottish Deerhound, a close relative of the Irish Wolfhound. It would have been nice to know the names of the dogs portrayed, their owners and the photographers. This is standard practice when featuring dog breeds. Thanks for the fun!

Actually Newfies will stay on the porch. They are low energy dogs; major couch potatoes. So you have to make sure they get regular exercise but they eat much less than other large breeds. They are designed to conserve energy to do the work they are bred to do; water rescue, removing nets from the ocean, pulling sleds and any other job you want. They are not bred for hunting or protection although they will defend. Unlike other dogs they do not attack, growl or bark to warn off danger; they stand between their people and danger. They are the gentlest of the gentle giants. You will even learn to love the tons of drool when you know a newf. They love, people, cats, other newfs, other dogs and everything else in the world, in that order. We have had many dogs and loved them all but I would recommend a newf to anyone, even in an apartment, but not in a hot climate, as the perfect dog.

Any dog will stay on the porch if he or she has been properly trained. That comment only reflects a failure on the owners part.

One member of our family is a Bouvier des Flandres. We live in Moncton area in New Brunswick. Their was an add in our paper a while back stating that a Bouvier in the Moncton area weighed an extreme amount (?) and was amazingly tall as well,5' approx. This was a male dog. We adore our Bouvier he is a big ol' sweety and thinks he is a lap dog.We are truely greatful for Garou for he is amazing. I can say the same for all our 12 furry babies lol.

I don't know about that. There's a lady that brings in her Irish Wolf hounds to my work & they tower any Dane I've ever seen..

undeniably the best breed out there is the Newfoundland. From guarding to babysitting, they are truly wonderful dogs. If you want the loyalty of the Newfoundland dog and the sport of the Labrador dog, get a mix breed of the two, the combination of both are awesome.

You should have name your article " The World’s Heavier Dog Breeds" because you miss some. You forgot quite completely the sight hounds: Borzoï (who can be as tall as any Great Dane), Scottish Deerhound, Afghan, Greyhound. Also Briard, pretty big, Sharplaninatz, Komondor, who are huge, Pyrenean, Tibetan Mastiff, Anatolian, Landseer (even if they are another New foudland, Pyrenean Mastiff, Bernese, Black Russian Terrier, American Akita (the Akita Inu is smaller) , St Hubert and probably I miss some.
And regarding of "the best breed", the best breed is not the Newfoundland. The best breed is the dog you have, you love, and who love you back. Me I had a Finish Spitz and she was the best... for me.

i have two saint bernards one female weighing in at 110, and my male is 130, as of now, he is still growing, only a year old he is,, I love big dogs, grew up with a male newf and will always fondly remember being pulled out of the snow or water by him.. my two now, are super excited at the cold weather.. and this winter the male with start to pull the kids in a wagon and the fe,ale will wear a pack.. they want to feel like they are working.. female is super great with the older kids and male is amazing with our younger ones.. Thanks for all the info on giant breeds. would rather know my dog is beside me then tripping over small dogs.. no offense to those who have small dogs, but they are ment to do something, not be carried around or dressed up.. spend that money on helping your community with hunger or abused families or something.. I am getting ready to take my two to see st johns ambulance to have them tested to see if they can go into seniors homes and or childrens places. cause I'll tell ya my daily walks with these two always take longer when kids are out as they love to get up close to such giants.. and I love and they love every minute of it..

  • 8 Strange Animal Hybrids

Very little interspecies mingling takes place in the animal kingdom, since creatures tend to prefer the company of their own kind. But even though most hybrid animals live in captivity and are the result of human intervention, both nature and people have managed to produce some pretty unlikely animal hook-ups. Here are some of the strangest ones on record.
