What Is It? - January 2012

Robert Buckles of Calgary writes, “This container measures 15 inches in length and is 21⁄8 inches wide. It’s zinc-plated, has a wire handle and is divided into two sections internally by a metal partition. A hinged flap at the top of the dividing strip is fitted with a pin that protrudes from each side by about a 1⁄4 inch and it has a tight-fitting lid. The hinged flap is designed to cover either the left or right section of the container but not both at once.” Can anyone help?

It looks like a big ligther.
Could be a case for extra long matches to start a fire, you know, the long ones so you don't burn your fingers....possibly.
I believe what the item is a container for carrying fusee flares which were in common use in by gone days of the railroad?
could be for matches or cigars.kinda big to be a lighter.Maybe can store matches so they do not get damp.I would say cigar case
From personal expereiunce I know that this type of case is to hold long fireplace/woodstove matches. The open side would have a little sand in the bottom into which spent matches were stuck and the covered side would hold unspent matchsticks. The cover serves to keep the matches dry.
The Item on page 65 of your Feb. March magazine is a paper counter I use this item for years at a printing plant in winnipeg MB.
