My Two Cents: Do We Need Tablets?
With so much technology right at our very fingertips today, we had to ask: do you think tablets are a great creation or do you not care for them at all?

With so much technology right at our very fingertips today, we had to ask: do you think tablets are a great creation or do you not care for them at all? Tablets like the iPad2 can be a great place to view your favourite magazines or read your favourite books. And there's also the convenience factor of having all your favourite publications in your hands anywhere you go.
So we want to know. What do YOU think about tablets like the iPad2 or Blackberry Playbook? What do you think about advances in technology today in general? Exciting? Or too much for you?

I love my iPad! I use it for keeping up with news streams from print newspapers to other websites and blogs. I read e-books on it and can tap into all my social media sources using it. We occasionally play Trivial Pursuit or Scrabble on it too. It fits into my purse when I need a mini-computer for work, and at home my three-year-old plays her own games on it. It's so intuitive that I really don't need to show her how to use it. It's also perfect for reading in bed with the lights off when I don't want to wake my husband!
I have recently purchased a Blackberry Tablet. At first I found it very intimidating, ( I do have some experience with computers). However, with some help from my children, I find it very useful and much handier than a laptop computer. The sensitivity of the touchscreen was a problem for a while, particularly when I tried to point out something to my son and accidentally touched the screen ! for which I was chastised promptly. The weather reports are great, books are easily accessed, games also. I am still working on using it for e-mails, the wi-fi is under control now. the picture quality is excellent and then the video phone and camera set up are great. I definitely believe tablets are here to stay. At least until someone comes up with something better. p.s. I am a couple of weeks off being eighty years old, so I can imagine how simple it must be for the youngsters of today to operate.
I'm coming at this from a Mom's and a school trustee's perspective. Our school district is in the process of putting wireless networks in all the schools to facilitate more use of tablets, smart phones etc. But there are concerns from a parent's perspective -- health concerns associated with wireless technology and access to unsuitable content. Some argue that especially at an elementary level, wireless is not necessary and could be exposing our children to harmful radiation. Others feel tablets are another tool to help some children who have difficulty with traditional learning methods. We hear a lot lately about 21st Century learning and folks equate that with technology and its myriad of possibilities. Others feel 21st Century learning is just that...learning in this century and maybe we should be making a move away from technology and back to small local economies. As you can see, we are just at the beginning stages of this discussion in our school district. I think it will prove to be a wonderful, informative and lively debate.
