Protect Your Computer from Cyber-Criminals

These days pirates have spread from the seas to the World Wide Web. The Internet has some bad neighbourhoods, but with clever navigation trouble can still be avoided. Keep your computer from being hijacked with these tips.

Keep Your Software Up-to-Date

Microsoft and other operating systems create updates to fix security problems they know hackers have discovered. To make sure your Windows computer remains up to date, open your browser and go to update.microsoft.com. Let the site scan your PC for missing updates and install any security patches you’re missing.

Have a Firewall

When computers access the web they open ‘ports’ to load information from the Web. If a hacker wants to access your files they can do so by entering your computer through this gateway.  A firewall acts as a sentinel between your computer and the World Wide Web, stopping hackers from being able to access your computer. If you’re using Windows XP, turn on the firewall by going to the Control Panel, clicking on Network and Internet Connections and selecting Windows Firewall.

Don’t Talk to Strangers

Visit sites that are trustworthy. These days, cyberspace is full of ‘malicious sites.’ These websites infect your computer with a virus or spyware the minute you load them onto your screen. To avoid stumbling into one, stick to reputable websites (government sites, magazine sites and the like). If you do want to go surfing, make sure you’re fully protected by spyware and anti-virus software.

Look Before You Leap

Check for suspicious tactics like deceptive links. To do this run your mouse over a link before you click on it and make sure that the domain name in that ‘status tool bar’ (the grey text bar at the bottom of your browser) matches the domain name of the site you’re on. This will ensure that you don’t leave a safe site.

Watch What You Reveal

Phishing is the latest security problem. This scheme happens when a bogus company, posing as your bank or credit card company, sends you an e-mail. Under the guide of 'security checks' they ask you to click on a link sending you to their phony website set up to resemble the company they are claiming to represent. They're hoping to fool you into handing over your account and password information. No legitimate company will ever ask for this kind of information in an e-mail, so never hand out it out over the web.

Check Site Validation

When you’re logging into an online account or doing online banking make sure the connection is secure. To do this look for a lock icon or a green bar at the top of your address bar.

Never Plug Your Computer Directly Into Your Modem

Build in some extra protection against hackers and spammers by using a router between your computer and your modem. This small device allows  several computers to share one internet connection but it also has a built-in firewall giving additional protection. To ensure your router is doing its job, read the manual and configure the router's settings according to your preferences.

Beware Of E-mail Attachments

E-mail attachments coming into your social networking inbox (Facebook, My Space or the like) are the most popular way to spread viruses and spyware. The infected computer sends out a brief message with an attachment or link. Once you open the attachment you're infected! So think before you click. If you don’t have a clear idea of what’s in an attachment or it's from someone you don't know, hit delete. If you must satiate your curiosity, send a reply message to the sender--if you know them--asking what it’s all about.

Use an Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware Program

These programs are essential. If kept up to date, they will usually catch viruses and spyware before they have time to infiltrate your entire system. But they have to also be updated on a regular basis. There's plenty of choices out there and some products are better than others so do your homework before you buy.

Stay In Tune

If you’re a Windows user visit microsoft.com/security/ on a regular basis to check for the latest updates. Also, keep an eye on the Microsoft Spyware information site.
