To score scholarships or other financial assistance, start looking at the beginning of your high school graduating year or even earlier.

A college or university degree can be expensive. One way to ensure you finish your degree without incurring a huge debt is through scholarships. The author is a master -- having received $71,000 to finance his education. Here are his top 10 tips for scoring scholarship dollars.
I remember all the stressful nights spent on the 20 or more applications I submitted for scholarships, bursaries and awards. But it was time well-spent as I’ve received $71,000 to help finance my university education. Here are my top tips:
1. Know what counts
Being an honour student with an 80% or higher average is usually required, but not always. What you do need is a well-rounded background, including involvement in your school and community. It also helps if your volunteer work has a focus. For example, since age ten I have promoted the importance of an active lifestyle for people with cystic fibrosis, and so I note that in applications.
2. Start Early
Look for scholarships or financial assistance at the start of your high school graduating year, or even earlier. Some applications are due in October. Make a list month-by-month of the application due dates, and whether these are postmark or receipt dates. I used Xpresspost for my applications so I could track when they were received.
3. Crunch the Numbers
Unlike scholarships, bursaries have an element of financial need. Eligibility is based not only on your own circumstances but those of your family, regardless of who’s paying for your education.
4. Do a Resume
Take the time to pull together information concerning your achievements and involvements, such as medals or trophies, certificates and photos: You’ll use the information in some form for all applications.
5. Be Prepared
Prepare your essay answers in advance, since many applications have similar questions. However, they are different enough that you will need to tailor your answers for each application.
