New love is blossoming everywhere, and we’ve discovered why. According to MeasureUP Place.com—an online resource that specializes in surveys about current trends and topics—these are the top five traits that women identified as "must-haves" in their dates and mates. Our experts explain why these qualities are so important.
 

1. Good Judgment. A man who makes sound decisions is more likely to be secure, successful and responsible, says relationship expert Valerie Gibson, author of Cougar: A Guide for Older Women Dating Younger Men. Good judgment means he’s not prone to making rash decisions that jeopardize the family’s well being. Psychologist Elizabeth Lombardo adds, “One of my clients started dating her husband because she knew if something bad happened, he could take care of her.”
2. Intelligence. Lawyers, doctors or scientists with advanced degrees need not apply! “Women are attracted to curiosity and commonsense,” says psychotherapist Karol Ward. “Not necessarily higher education.” J.M. Kearns, Ph.D., author of Why Mr. Right Can't Find You says that intelligence helps build a successful relationship by improving communication, facilitating problem-solving and keeping passion alive.
3. Faithful. Women feel more secure and unified as a family when they’re with faithful men. “Knowing of a partner’s fidelity increases a woman’s self-confidence,” says Ward. “Faithfulness allows a couple to become a unified, powerful duo.” Fidelity shows women that they are valued and respected—and that they can trust their men.
4. Affectionate. Psychologist Diana Kirschner, author of Love in 90 Days: The Essential Guide to Finding Your Own True Love, says, “Showing affection is the cornerstone of a close and sexually satisfying relationship. Without affectionate touch, intimate relationships wither and die.” Kirschner explains that physical touch releases the tend-and-befriend or “cuddle” hormone (oxytocin), which strengthens feelings of attachment.
5. Financially Responsible. “Financially stable men don’t stress if their car breaks down, they’re asked to pick up the check, or an unexpected bill arises,” says Matt Titus, relationship expert and author of Why Hasn’t He Called? “They’re ready for it.” Psychologist Carole Disenhof agrees, saying that financially responsible men create a peaceful, less anxious and less stressful life for the whole family.
