How Polite Are Canadians ?
Reader’s Digest ranked 15 of our biggest cities on their consideration for strangers.
You may recall the worldwide courtesy test that the Digest undertook in our July 2006 issue, but this year we put our country under the politeness microscope.
For our test, we travelled from Vancouver to St. John's, to find out if the rumours are true: that courtesy is a thing of the past.
What we discovered is that Western and Eastern hospitality are alive and well. But what about that metropolis so many Canadians love to hate, which ranked third in last year's global test? Poor Toronto -- you must have been having a bad day.
Tales from our Testers: Highlights... and Lowlights
Join the Debate
Does it bug you when someone is so wrapped up in a cellphone conversation he lets a door slam in your face? Or when a colleague answers emails on her PDA during a meeting? We want to hear from you.
Smile, You're on Courteous Camera!
If you thought our testers were just standing back and taking notes, think again. For this challenging assignment, our researchers were armed with video cameras to capture every time a stranger lent a helping hand...or let the door slam in their face. Watch the clips to see what these courteous, and not-so-courteous, strangers had to say about their habits.
