In the August issue of Reader’s Digest, we profiled Belinda Stronach, former Liberal MP for Newmrket-Aurora, Ont. What ticks Belinda Stronach off? In the article, she’s quoted as saying, “It frustrates the heck out of me when well-to-do Canadians don’t support charities. I do a lot of fundraising, and there are people who see me coming and run. It is amazing how tough it is to get these people to donate. I think, ‘You did well in this country. You should give back.’”

She’s absolutely right: Canadians are pretty tight-fisted when it comes to supporting charities. According to Statistics Canada (2005 data for Canadians 15 and over), the median* donation to charitable organizations, among Canadians who claimed a charitable donation on their 2005 income tax return, was only $240. Here’s how the provinces stack up:

* The median is the midpoint among those who donate: half give more, half give less.
