Women Without Children
“So when are you going to have a baby?” That’s a question often asked of the growing number of Canadian women who do not intend to become mothers.
In the August edition of Reader’s Digest, “Nobody’s Mother” tackles this topic quite poignantly. Condensed from the book Nobody’s Mother: Life Without Kids, our article shares the stories of five women who are child-free — some by choice, others by happenstance. Each writes frankly about her life, and her decision not to have children.
Lorna Crozier teaches at the University of Victoria and has published 15 books of poetry. In her 30s,she realized she wasn’t going to have children — the man she was with had already had five, as well as a vasectomy. When she pointed this out to her mother, the response she got was, “Lorna, not every woman has to have children, you know.”
Jennifer Wise, an author, artist and associate professor of theatre history, says her parents were greatly disappointed that she didn’t have children. She asks, “Whence comes this idea that all women should reproduce? Not from any biological necessity, that’s for sure. On a glgobal level, we produce millions more babies each year than we can possibly care for. Yet motherhood continues to be sentimentalized as the ultimate social good a woman can do.”
