Ten Best Dogs For Families

From The Reader's Digest Illustrated Book of Dogs

King Charles Spaniel
English Toy Spaniel

This small spaniel, sometimes called a Carpet Spaniel or Charlie, was long a favourite of European royalty. The breed, which probably originated in China or Japan, was well established in France before appearing in England in the 1500s. It is believed to be the 'Spaniell Gentle, otherwise known as the Comforter,' described by Dr. Johannes Caius, physician to Queen Elizabeth I. Ladies of the court are said to have sought winter warmth by keeping the little animals hidden under their enormous skirts. One of the breed also comforted Mary Stuart during her last days, clinging to her even after her death on the scaffold in 1587. Her loyal pet was one of a pack of sporting dogs she had brought with her from France, when returning as Queen of Scotland.

The breed achieved its greatest popularity during the reign of Charles II (1660-85). The king kept a large number as pets and brought them every where with him. This passion not only gave the dogs their name but seems to have incensed Samuel Pepys. The diarist wrote in his famous Journal that the king amused himself with his dogs, instead of attending to his royal duties.

The monarch's pets were known as Black and Tans. Three other varieties were developed later -- the tri-colour Prince Charles; the Ruby, a solid chestnut red; and the Blenheim, a red and white.

Whichever coat it wears, the King Charles is affectionate, intelligent, and an excellent pet for a family with small children. It is no longer used as a sporting dog.

Practical information: The long coat and feathering must be brushed and combed each day. The ears must be cleaned regularly with a cotton wad soaked in mild soapy water and all dead and matted hair must be removed. Clean the eye rims with boiled water.
