Reader's Digest reader helps nab
"World's Most Wanted"
Montreal, September 16, 1999 -- On September 15, 1999, at 4:15 pm at the Stardust Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Grant Warren Beaucage was apprehended when a casino cashier recognized him after reading an October 1999 Reader's Digest article, "World's Most Wanted," in which Beaucage's story is featured.
Beaucage is one of Canada's most wanted after being charged with the brutal 1994 murder of his ex-wife, Aileen O'Brien Beaucage. The 31-year-old mother of two was stabbed at least 20 times in the back and found dead in Burlington, Ontario, in an abandoned car. In January 1997, just days before his trial was to begin, Beaucage disappeared and has been wanted by Canadian police ever since.
Murray Lewis, editor-in-chief of the Canadian Reader's Digest, said, "We are extremely gratified that our efforts helped end the search for a fugitive from Canadian justice. This result underlines both the reach of Reader's Digest and the depth of the relationship we share with our readers. It also boosts our hopes that our article and the information on our web site will lead to even more fugitives being found."
"This is certainly a first for us," said Reader's Digest worldwide editor-in-chief Christopher Willcox. "Reader's Digest put out a global all-points bulletin to our 100 million readers. And we got immediate results."
Beaucage was one of six international suspects profiled in the October issue of Reader's Digest. The article appeared in all 48 editions of the magazine, which are printed in 19 languages worldwide. Copies of the magazine began arriving in subscribers' homes several days ago. The October edition will appear on newsstands on September 21st.
Beaucage was nabbed, according to Canadian authorities, after a female cashier at the Stardust Casino saw in the Reader's Digest a photo of a person she had just served. She notified a hotel security guard, who then called Det. Sgt. Al Frost in Canada's Halton Regional Police Major Crime Bureau. The Digest had published the Halton Police tipline number in the magazine.
A team of officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, US Marshals Service and Las Vegas Metro Police unit, the Criminal Apprehension Team, took Beaucage into custody on a 1st degree murder warrant.
"We are very grateful for the assistance provided by Reader's Digest and their readership in assisting us in this apprehension," said Detective Inspector Signy Pittman, who oversees the Halton Major Crime Bureau.
