Flying the Furry Skies

A unique new airline allows your pet to travel in comfort – and style!

Spurred by the trouble they had booking a family holiday with their Jack Russell terrier, Zoe, a US couple has launched the world’s first pets-only airline. Referring to its pampered customers as pawsengers, Pet Airways caters to pet owners who can’t tolerate the thought of Felix or Frodo being handled as baggage and stowed away in the cargo hold.

The airline will fly dogs and cats in a climate-controlled main cabin with original fixtures such as seats removed to make way for pet carriers. After being dropped off at the Pet Lounge, animals are placed under the care of trained attendants to ensure they are comfortable, safe and have regular toilet breaks during the flight.

“Potty breaks are very important to your pet,” says Pet Airways.“With the human airlines, your pet could be made to hold themselves for a very, very long time. This means that it may take us longer to get to where we are going, but the care of our pawsengers is our first priority.”

There’s even a frequent flyer programme to reward the regulars. The airline currently services five major US cities, with one-way fares starting from about $200, including snacks and refreshments if required.
