| In a word ladder puzzle you have to change one word into another by altering a single letter at each step. Each step on the word ladder must be a valid word. Some Ladders only have a top and bottom clue. This type of puzzle was invented in 1878 by Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland.
