1. Custom Chevrolet Camaro

Hot Wheels’ first die-cast car—the Custom Camaro—hit shelves on May 18, 1968, launching the “Original 16.” The custom design was inspired by California muscle cars, reflecting the car culture of the era, which emphasized speed, power and performance.

4. Mercury Cougar (1968)

This classic addition to the Hot Wheels collection was designed by Harry Bradley and based on the 1967 Mercury Cougar. It debuted in the 1968 line as part of the “Original 16” castings. Every version of the car had a die-cast body, die-cast chassis, redline wheels, bent-axle suspension and Spectraflame paint. The casting was originally available in only two colours, Spectraflame Blue and Spectraflame Orange. Subsequent releases expanded the colour options. Would you believe the colour of your car affects your chances of getting into an accident? (It’s true!)
